Big Fat Industries/ Couch Potato Companies
Couch Potato Companies team-up everyday with Big Fat Industries (fast food, soft drink, junk food companies) to target kids. Some examples:
- 88% of all ads on Nickelodeon are for unhealthy foods from Big Fat Industries.
- Kids see far more commercials for unhealthy foods from Big Fat Industries as for healthy foods:
-Food makers spend $15 billion a year on advertising, mostly for junk food targeted at kids! 19
-The soft drink industry spends more than $700 million on advertising a year. 20
-Subtotal: $15.7 Billion
-The “5 A Day” campaign budget to promote fruits and veggies was only $3.5 million. 21
-Only $2.7 million is spent on promoting healthy dietary guidelines, like the new food pyramid, by the US Department of Agriculture. 22
-Subtotal: 6.2 million
- The average kid with 20,000 commercials per year for unhealthy foods.
Not all countries allow Big Fat Industries and Couch Potato Companies to team-up against kids. Some European countries prohibit television advertising of unhealthy foods to kids under 12-years-old. Clearly, many consider this teaming-up against kids to be a major contributor to childhood obesity.
